Todaiji Betsuin Amidaji Temple Ishiburo (Stone Bath)
東大寺別院阿弥陀寺 石風呂
The ishiburo (stone bath) at Amidaji, a branch temple of Todaiji in Hofu, Yamaguchi, is said to have been built by the priest Chogen for the people who gathered timber for Todaiji's reconstruction. It is an ancient-style steam bath in which a stone chamber is fired with firewood and the floor is spread with a medicinal herb called sekisho (Acorus gramineus). Volunteers of the Amidaji Ishiburo Preservation Society light the fire on the first Sunday of every month. In the experience program offered through the Hofu Tourism and Convention Association, participants can take part in lighting and tending the fire and in cutting the sekisho.
