A herbal sauna combines sauna heat with herbs. The main styles are Thai-style herbal steam, yakuso (medicinal-herb) steam, herbal löyly and vihta, and some venues run them inside a tent. Of the 103 facilities listed here, 34 can be used as a private or reserved room, and 16use a tent. Every listing was verified on the facility’s official site or an equally citable source in August 2026.

Which herbal saunas in Japan can be booked as a private room?

34 of the 103 facilities in this guide can be used as a private or reserved room. The prefectures with the most are Tokyo (7), Osaka (4), Nagano (2). Use the "Private / shared" filter on the list to narrow it down. 16 facilities use a tent, entered one person at a time.

What is the difference between Thai herbal steam and yakuso steam?

Thai-style herbal steam simmers Thai herbs such as plai, kamin (turmeric) and takrai (lemongrass), and fills a tent or a small room with the steam; the room is usually kept at a low to middle temperature, around 40–50°C. Yakuso (medicinal-herb) steam is the style found at bathing facilities across Japan, and covers rooms such as the kanpo yakuso salt sauna, where mugwort and kanpo crude drugs are turned into steam, as well as mushiyu and ishiburo, stone chambers warmed by hot-spring heat and lined with herbs. The families of herbs used, and the origins of the facilities, are different.

Is yomogi-mushi the same thing as a herbal sauna?

Yomogi-mushi is a Korean-derived style in which you sit on a stool with an opening and mugwort steam rises from below; it is usually offered as a single-person apparatus. This guide covers rooms you enter with your whole body — sauna rooms, steam rooms and tents. Many facilities also offer yomogi-mushi alongside; where that is the case it is noted in the “Style” row on the facility page.

How are facilities selected for this guide?

Only facilities whose permanent use of herbs in the sauna could be confirmed in primary sources such as their official site are listed. Herb use at one-off events, herbal baths alone, and löyly with aroma water alone are out of scope. No facility has requested or paid for inclusion.
