Kannawa Mushiyu (Beppu Municipal Steam Bath)
市営 鉄輪むし湯
A municipal hot-spring facility run by the city of Beppu. It is said to have been founded in 1276 (Kenji 2, Kamakura period) by the monk Ippen. The floor of the roughly eight-tatami stone chamber is heated by hot-spring steam and covered with sekisho (Acorus gramineus), a medicinal herb that grows only along clear streams; bathers lie down on it wearing a yukata. Men's and women's chambers are separate, each accommodating up to four people at a time. The poet Ujo Noguchi wrote of the scent of sekisho here.
